The University of Birmingham, in partnership with the International Development Department, is accepting applications for the fully funded scholarship for international students at the UK University Birmingham.

This fully funded scholarship offers an exceptional opportunity for international students with a passion for making a difference in the world through the pursuit of knowledge and practical experience. Successful candidates will start on a transformative journey, undertaking a two-year master’s degree in MSc Development Policy and Politics, enriched by an internship at the renowned Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
What’s Included?
The international students of this scholarship will enjoy a comprehensive package of benefits designed to support their academic and professional growth:
- Full tuition fee
- Air fare to and from the United Kingdom and visa
- Monthly stipend of £950 for 18 months
- Arrival allowance of £950
- The remaining six months for the internship will be funded directly to the successful candidate by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
Eligibility and Requirements for Fully Funded Scholarship
- A first-class Honors degree or equivalent from a recognized university is mandatory.
- Applicants must be under 30 years of age at the time of application.
- Candidates must be African nationals residing in an African country, with preference given to those in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Proficiency in English is essential. Non-native English speakers must demonstrate strong written and verbal English skills, with a minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS or 580/93 on the TOEFL.
Application Process
Please note that applications for the Mo Ibrahim Scholarship must be submitted through the University’s online application system by 8 April 2024. In addition to the standard documents, you are required to upload a 500-word statement and CV. Your statement should highlight why you are the strongest candidate for this scholarship.

The selected candidate will engage in a rigorous one-year MSc program, delving into the following modules:

- Democracy, Dictatorship, and Development
Internship Experience
During the integrated one-year internship, participants will divide their time equally between two key components:
- Conducting Groundbreaking Research
- Collaborate with academics at IDD and the GSDRC.
- Engage in research projects aimed at addressing pressing development challenges.
- Contributing to Impactful Initiatives at the Mo Ibrahim Foundation:
- Participate in initiatives aimed at advancing governance in Africa.
- Contribute to projects focused on enhancing the development agenda across the continent.
